Forklift Safety Statistics
Forklift trucks are involved in 1% of all accidents which occur in a factory environment. But it is these accidents which will cause 10% of all physical injuries that occur. In most cases such accidents will often be blamed upon the operator. Therefore all operators today are required to take forklift safety training to ensure that they are aware of the inherent risks and dangers relating to the operating of such equipment.
Because of the inherent dangers that are associated with using such vehicles all operators need to go through formal training and obtain a certificate to show that they are fit and capable to operate such a vehicle.
Therefore in 1998 the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) published a ruling with regard to training of forklift truck operators. It is this rule which now requires all employers who use forklift trucks and employ staff to operate these vehicles that they have the correct training program in place. It is these programs which will ensure the safety of the operators as well as those employees working around them.
As part of their training the operator should be able to show that he can handle the vehicle safely. It through the successful completion of all the training that an operator will be able to show that he has this skill. Only once they have done the training and obtained their certification then should an employer permit them to operate any type of forklift vehicle that the company has on its premises. There are a number of ways in which an employer can provide the right kind of training for their forklift operators. They can either employ a qualified instructor from an outside organization to come in and do the training for them. The other alternative and which is probably the least expensive is to employ a member of staff to carry out the relevant training as well as evaluate each operator's competency levels. It is during this training that all operators will be provided with every piece of essential information relating to forklift safety and will help to ensure that the risks of any accidents occurring in the workplace are greatly reduced.
