Forklift Safety Cages

 

 

Forklift safety cages can be attached to a forklift truck to ensure that those enclosed within are able to work safely at high levels.

Each type of cage should provide access for 2 people and their tools and equipment to be able to work safely at an elevated level. The gates of these should only open inwards and be secured upon closing with a spring tension latch. The floor also should be made from a non slip material and there should be a raised lip around the edge of the floor.

When placed on to the forks of the vehicle the cage should be secured using 2 safety pins which are should lock it in to place just behind the heels of each fork. Also the cage should meet all the safety standards and regulations placed upon such attachments in the country where they are being used.

Below are some guidelines which should help to ensure that you are using the right type of safety cage to meet government regulations and which provide your employees with high levels of safety also.

1. You need to check the load limit on the forklift truck you are considering using for attaching the safety cage to. This will need to be verified by checking the loading capacities in the manual that came with the vehicle. Also you need to work out the weight of the cage along with the weight of those that will be within it carrying out the work.

2. Ensure that the platform is secure attached to the fork carriage and/or the backrest so that the truck is able to support the weight of the cage and those contained within it. It is essential that the forks do not move at any time once the safety cage has been attached. In order to attach it securely to the vehicle you can use either turnbuckles, a chain that is of hoisting grade level or through use of a wire rope securement system.

What is extremely important when using forklift safety cages within any work environment is that those who are using them should have been provided with the appropriate training? This means that not only the forklift operator but those employees who will actually be inside the cage carrying out high level work are aware of all safety issues relating to this type of equipment.
