Forklift Safety Training - How Essential Is It?

Forklift safety training is an essential requirement that all operators must undertake before they are allowed to use these vehicles. During such training they will learn not only the hazards that they will face whilst driving the vehicle but also those hazards relating to repairing and refueling (if petrol or diesel driven).

Plus they will learn everything with regards to safety issues relating to the batteries if it is an electric powered forklift.

By ensuring that the correct forklift training has been provided to those operating these vehicles will help to ensure that serious or fatal accidents are prevented. So as part of any operator or mechanics training in relation to working with forklift trucks these people need to be familiar with every part of the vehicle that they are involved with.

A great way to ensure that all safety regulations are followed is to provide your employees with a safety checklist that they should go through prior to them either using or working on the vehicle at any time. It is important that they carry out an inspection of the vehicle prior to them using it. During this inspection they should check the following:-

  1. Make sure all attachments are secure and in their correct position.
  2. They should check the tires on the vehicle including their pressure levels.
  3. They should ensure that all lights and warning equipment is functioning properly.
  4. They should check that the steering and hydraulic controls are working correctly.
  5. It is essential that they check the levels of engine oil and other fluids are at the right amounts. Plus they need to ensure that there are no leaks occurring.
  6. They will also need to check that all safety equipment on the vehicle such as cages and safety belts are securely fixed.

As well as learning about the inspections that need to be carried out before using the vehicle operators and mechanics will be given forklift training relating to the actual operation of the vehicle. It is during this stage of the training that they learn about the hazards they will face whilst working in an environment where other people are likely to be moving around and may not be aware of the forklift truck being close to them. Certainly in manufacturing and warehouse environments the noise can sometimes make people unaware of other things that are occurring around them and it is therefore essential that all those who operate forklifts trucks are able to second guess what is likely to occur and so prevent an accident from occurring.
