Some Background Information Relating To Forklift Trucks.
Today you can get forklift trucks in a various designs and all will have a
different load capacity (the amount of goods they are able to carry safely).
Today in many warehouses around the world most of these vehicles will have between
1 and 5 ton load capacities yet there have been some built that can actually
carry up to 50 tonnes of load if required.
The operator or driver of a forklift truck is able to not just control the
forks which can be raised or lowered but is also able to tilt the mast on which
the forks are. This allows them to be able to compensate for those loads which
may angle the blades of the forks towards the ground and which could result
in the load slipping off. Plus because the mast is able to tile it provides
them with a little more moverability when on uneven ground.
Whilst for some of the more advanced models of machines now available to be
used they may allow the operator to move both the tines and backrest of the
forks also. This then makes it much easier for them to place the loads on the
forks before they begin moving the goods. Whilst will allow the tines to be
moved together or apart through a hydraulic system which means that there is
no requirement for the operator of the truck to leave his cab at any time in
order to adjust them manually prior to loading up with different sized loads.
Certainly since the inception of the forklift truck back in 1920 things have
advanced quite considerably in relation to the technology now be used on these
vehicles. But generally most forklift trucks will be described as follows:-
- It is a motive machine which has wheels or tracks and is then powered using
a drive train.
- They will have an internal combustion engine which is fueled either by
gasoline, diesel or LPG or they may have an electric motor instead. Those
that are powered by electric will use either batteries or fuel cells to provide
the current (it can be alternating or direct).
- The mast on these vehicles is either hydraulically or chain operated.
All forklift trucks will have as standard a overhead guard which is a metal
roof and support posts at each corner and is there to protect the operator at
all times from falling items. Especially as safety is tantamount in any business
today the operator of any kind of forklift truck is required to take a full
course in how to operate the equipment properly. Today forklift trucks are an
essential part of manufacturing and warehouse businesses and therefore as time
passes so there will be even further technological developments with these vehicles
which will make them even safer to use than they are already.
